Practice: Abs; Kenpo

February 9, 2008

So this one frustrated me somewhat.  We got started late, so the sun was hitting the big pull-down projection screen we use as our tv.    So it was hard to see anything.  We missed the supplemental ab work-out yesterday so we did it this morning and instead of my abs hurting and getting a work-out, my hips, back and neck were in pain due to the posistions.

As we are a taewkondo family, the kenpo moves were a bit daunting and confusing.   And some of the blocks and kicks were strange and uncomfortable to us.   Yet we are all sore so we did get a good work-out.

This was one of the longer work-outs because the abs were included, it was 90 minutes total.

DH had asked me to compare our morning and recovery drink to P90X’s.   I did the best I can and here is what I came up with:

* Pre work out Morning Juice (this makes about 4 cups for the whole family; kids drink 4-6 oz, DH drinks about 1.5 cups and I drink a little less than DH)

4-5 large
juicing carrots
1/2 head celery
2 granny smith apples

put through the juicer.

fat 1 g
carbs 42 g
pro 4 g

Shakes (our recovery drink - we make 2 blenders-full of these, one would equal about 5 cups total)

1 C fresh OJ
3 large ripe (spotted) bananas
2 tbsp Manitoba Harvest Hemp Protein
1/2 tsp vitamin C crystals
1/2 tsp acidophilus powder
2 tbs agave nectar
ice

blend

fat 7.8 g
carbs 141.25 g
protein 21 g

The individual nutrients (vitamins & minerals, etc.) were hard to figure out on many of the data bases, but we were confident that we were getting all of our nutrients first-hand and high-quality.     Most of the nutrients were well over 100% RDA, if not many times that.

We didn’t know if the nutrients in the P90X recovery drink were sourced naturally or if they were synthetic, I also noticed artificial ingredients and waste products (whey, lecithin).  I provided some links below but to give a clearer picture of whey & lecithin, whey is the liquidy stuff that separates from cottage cheese and yogurt and floats to the top.

In comparison the sugars in our drinks are from whole foods whereas the sugars in the P90X recovery drink are from a processed product.

So for the value and nutrition the fresh juice and blended fruit drinks we found were far superior nutritionally.   Plus being home we have the time to make the juices and shakes, about 30-40 minutes total.

Cost-wise, it would probably be the same or a bit more to feed the 5 of us monthly as it would be to buy one recover drink mix a month for $45.   The most expensive is the hemp protein which is probably not totally necessary as is the vitamin C crystals and acidophilus, I just added it for extra nutrition and and immune booster.   Also the blended fruit serves as part of a meal which cuts down on other meal costs

So with a juicer and blender, there’d really be no reason to not use fresh foods unless there’s no time, even then eating a few oranges and bananas and celery sticks would work well for recovery
